Prevention of violence against women and girls has threefold functions – namely Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary prevention:
- Primary prevention: This form of prevention involves stopping or reducing violence before it starts. Primary Prevention programmes include community mobilisation, school-based initiatives, economic empowerment, and parenting programmes.
- Secondary prevention: These programmes focus on stopping repeated incidents of violence. Interventions for at risk individuals and families, crisis counselling, safehouses, and police protection orders are such Secondary Prevention programmes.
- Tertiary prevention: Tertiary Prevention or Response programmes aim to prevent and treat long-term problems for survivors and families as a result of violence. Examples of Tertiary Prevention programmes include psychosocial support, socio-economic assistance, and legal aid.
