VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PREVENTION PROGRAMMING GUIDE

How prevention links to response

Evidence

Programmes to prevent violence against women and children can also be distinguished as Prevention, Mitigation, and Response:

  • Prevention programmes aim to reduce violence at a community or whole-of-population level, also called Universal Prevention. Or may include programmes that work with higher-risk families or groups to intervene early to stop violence from escalating in frequency and or severity – this is called Selective Prevention
  • Mitigation progammes are those that work to identify and reduce risks of exposure to GBV as a result of wider humanitarian and development programmes.
  • Response programmes want to address the needs of survivors and reform institutional responses to violence, such as the police and healthcare.
