VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PREVENTION PROGRAMMING GUIDE

Guiding principles for prevention programming

Checklists
Ensuring safe, effective programme development

This is a set of guiding principles for VAW prevention programming to ensure our work is safe and ethical. It is important to work with your staff,  intended beneficiaries, partners, and technical experts to discuss how to operationalise these principles:

1. Adopt a human rights-based approach, putting the needs and priorities of women at the centre.

2. Apply an intersectional analysis to all stages of programme development, through understanding how diverse women are affected by GBV and included in prevention programmes.

3. Use a survivor-centred approach, listening and attending to survivor’s needs and priorities.

4. Follow ethical guidelines and adopt a do no harm approach.

5. Understand and adapt to different socio-cultural contexts.

6. Understand the needs of and be inclusive of all women.

7. Ensure holistic programming addressing different levels of the socio-ecological model.

8. Work in partnership with women and women’s rights organisations.

9. Draw on existing evidence.

10. Develop a clear vision and theory of change.
