VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PREVENTION PROGRAMMING GUIDE

Select an appropriate prevention strategy

Decision-making guides

There is a growing global evidence base on particular programme approaches which have been effective in reducing the rates of violence against women or have shown promise, for example, through reducing risk factors for violence and promoting positive, healthy behaviour and relationships.

To make your decision on the appropriate prevention strategy for your context, you should consider:

  • What are the key risk factors and triggers for this specific type of violence in my context, and which programme approaches have proven effective in addressing these risk factors?
  • What strategies have worked to address the specific type of violence you want to reduce?
  • What is the global evidence on the impacts of this strategy on violence against women (VAW)?
  • Is there any relevant evidence from similar programmes in your local context? What were the lessons learned?
  • Looking at the programme examples, do you think this kind of approach would work in your context? Why / why not?
  • Does your organisation and potential partners have the expertise to implement a programme under this strategy? What level of capacity development would be required?
  • Do you have enough time and budget to design/adapt, implement and evaluate a programme?
  • What are others doing in this context? How could your programme work alongside theirs to holistically address the risk factors?
  • Can you design and implement the programme respecting the guiding principals of ethics and safety?
