VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PREVENTION PROGRAMMING GUIDE

What can you do on VAW prevention with 5 years+* of funding?

Resource Considerations

Design, pilot, implement and evaluate a new or adapted prevention and response program in a new context

 – 5 + years is an ideal time period to design and test a prevention programme (e.g. on IPV, NPSV, child marriage) in a new context and generate robust evidence of its impact
– A robust design/adaptation and piloting phase requires 12-18 months
– Many evidence-based programmes require an implementation phase of > 24 months to ensure shifts in social norms and reductions in violence
– A robust mixed methods impact evaluation (e.g. randomized control trial + qualitative research) requires 6-12 months to collect and analyse baseline and endline data

– See this slide for example implementation costs for different program approaches
– A mixed methods impact evaluation with RCT usually costs > $500,000

Scale up a successful prevention intervention to new populations and regions

– Once a prevention program has proven successful, it can be optimized and then scaled up to more people and or communities
– This should ideally be undertaken with local or national government institutions and resources to ensure sustainability

– See here for example implementation costs for different program approaches.

Integrate prevention intervention into another sectoral intervention

– Most sectoral programs (e.g. health, education, infrastructure) are implemented for 3+ years
– Adequate time is needed to design and pilot a prevention intervention, including recruitment / training of sectoral and specialist staff or partners
